CMHA Celebrates National Volunteer Week

CMHA Peel Dufferin volunteers play a crucial role in our organization and our community. That’s why from April 23 to 29, CMHA Peel Dufferin joins organizations across the country in celebrating Canada’s 12.7 million volunteers during National Volunteer Week.

Volunteering can take many forms. At CMHAs across the country, volunteers are found working on special projects or programs, within fundraising activities such as Ride Don’t Hide, or serving on local boards. All of these activities help improve quality of life for individuals and families who are affected by mental health issues.

For CMHA Peel Dufferin volunteer Simone her different volunteer roles are deeply rewarding.

I have always admired the work that CMHA has been doing in our community. As an advocate for Mental Health, Mental health awareness needs to be moved to the frontier of daily conversations and they assist to help get the dialogue going.

Volunteering has helped me to escape the shame of the stigma – I’ve seen their impact in the lives of personal friends and colleagues and wanted to help where I could.

Volunteering with CMHA has done a lot for me overall as an individual who welcomes change and growth. The endless opportunities that range from volunteering at “Ride don’t hide”, to setting up displays at various locations, to being a part of The Speakers Bureau – has allowed me to meet new people as well enhance my public speaking skills.

One of my personal goals with CMHA is to be a participant in the “Ride don’t Hide” bike ride. As much as it gives me great satisfaction cheering on our riders, there is an inner drive inside of me saying I need to do this in remembrance of those I have lost to a mental illness.

CMHA not only allows me to volunteer, but in that process they educate me and make sure that I am well equipped to be able to represent them in the community in a positive light. Through my volunteer role I feel; have seen evidence that I am helping to change lives. It’s a great feeling. I am very grateful for this opportunity!

– Simone
